Basic Instructions for Replacing Pressed Cane
| Wet old cane and spline with warm vinegar water. As it soaks in, remove as much cane as possible with sharp cutters.
Next, break finishing seal between outer edge of spline and chair (with trimming knife) to prevent wood damage when removing spline. Using chisel, align with groove and carefully hammer into spline, lifting gently. Clean out entire groove of all cane, glue and spline. Wet new cane under warm faucet water and shake out excess. Center on seat opening. Hammer one wedge at center back and one at center front. Continue around rotating wedges until all cane is in the groove. Trim excess to below the groove edge before inserting spline. Size wet spline to groove, trim to fit. But, put a thin trail of Liquid Hide® glue in groove before inserting sized spline. Tamper in, using wide end of wedge as buffer. Let dry completely. Seat will tighten on its own to a good tension. Job done! |
